English, the new lingua franca, is the language of communication in most fields. Sports is no exception, obviously. Players of various sports need a common language to be able to communicate and understand each other. Therefore, English words have almost “invaded” the Romanian language, replacing the Romanian words even we have an equivalent. The study, part of an ample research conducted with my Master student, Maria (Forton) Țucudean and included in her BA thesis, presents the long way of an English word until its assimilation in Romanian. Besides the theoretical background and the stages of assimilation, the study presents examples of words assimilated by the Romanian language, all pertaining to the field of sports. Anglicismele, as Romanians call words of English origin used in their mother tongue are very common in the press, in writings of all type and in the vocabulary of sport lovers.
