STROE'S ”SNOWBALL”

Abstract

The study starts form the premise that there is an undeniable connection between the idea of transformation and development of the sound material of a musical work and the (Western) European classical music tradition. In order to trace the consequences pf this mode pf thinking within Romanian new music, the analysis focuses on a case study: Part I, “Augmentation en boule de neige” from “Mandala cu o polifonie de Antonio Lotti (1667-1740)” by Aurel Stroe. In teh end, conclusions are drawn regarding the identification of the constitutive (and necessary) elements of a musical transformational process, as well as a possible definition of it.
