Abstract

The present work proposes a short foray into the opuses with religious inspiration from the creation of Giocchino Rossini, especially towards the Messa di Gloria. Approaching the style of opera buffa and seria, Gioacchino Rossini is the one who will dominate his precursors and contemporaries in the creation of the genre, during the period of Italian musical romanticism. Less well known, however, is his creation of sacred music. Although he composed only three religiously inspired works: Petite Messe Solennelle, Messa di Gloria and Stabat Mater, they remain masterpieces of universal classical music. Even more than Giuseppe Verdi, Rossini suffered from the prejudice that the Italian opera composer's sacred music would be compromised by its secular character. But a closer look can debunk this myth.
